このタイトルは、詩人ラマルティーヌの同名の詩集によっています。詩集は1830年に出版され、当時２０歳前後だったリストはこれに深い感銘を得ました。晩年に聖職者となり宗教的な生活に入ったリストは、この作品の中で宗教的な思想が大いに表現されています。1845年から52年ころにかけて主にワイマールで作曲されました。
なお、第４曲「死者の追憶」には初期稿版(作品１５４)がありますので、併せて紹介しておきます。
